Sweat: The Story of the Fleshtones, America's Garage Band
By Joe Bonomo
"Joe Bonomo has written a fine book; a book not only about a band or times passed, but also about the rare virtue of endurance." – Nick Tosches
"In Sweat, Joe Bonomo confronts the realities of life in one of America’s great unsung bands of heroes: the Fleshtones. Rocking the house down night after night, holding on to their unique vision forever, whether laughing in the face of failure, caught in the rip tides of American culture, battling on the New York streets, or crowded in the back of a van on its way to the furthest reaches of the solar system…It’s a ‘Blue Whale’ of a story: hilarious, harrowing, and ultimately inspiring." – Peter Case, singer-songwriter
"Rock and roll is a pretty egalitarian affair. On any given night any band can be the best band in the world, if only for ten minutes. The amazing thing about the Fleshtones is that every night for the last thirty years they have consistently been the best live band on earth. Year in, year out – high, low and in between – the Fleshtones have embodied the very essence of rock and roll. This great book by Joe Bonomo really gets to the heart of who the Fleshtones are, and the price they paid. Now it’s up to you to check out the Fleshtones when they hit your town." – Peter Buck, R.E.M.

I am up to the beginning of the IRS years and I can't wait to get home and see what happens next. Please, please, please come to Chapel Hill Fleshtones!!!! It's been too long.... need a fix....

 | I just read the book, I felt a little depressed after that...
Man! You guys went through so many things, therefore I love you more than ever (is that possible?). I've seen the Tones 14 times live, I received 14 shots of pure fun and love, I want to see them at least 14 more time, even if they don't come so often to Switzerland.
Each human tries to spend his lifetime the best he can, you guys took the right way!
See you in the light!
Ps:I can't wait for next record, come on Fleshtoooooones!

 | Whew! Quite the read. thanks to Joe Bonomo for writing the book, but in hindsight, don't know if I should personally have read this. I've always seen the Fleshtones as an escape from grim reality but reading that book really took that lustre away. I mean there is absolutely NO mystery left. Is that a good thing? Kind of depressing actually. I just hope I can still listen to the music in the same way after this. I need it's uplifting energy and spirit.

 | hey you guys,
now that i've finished the book i have to say it's a total blast and exciting to read. however, i have to disagree with the band's assessment of the album "laboratory of sound." this has always been one of my favorite albums of all times and i think it just rocks! i think peter's vocals are just great and it's full of great songs..."sands of our lives", "a motor needs gas", "i don't live today", the list goes on. i think you guys must be like the beautiful woman who looks in the mirror and sees only flaws. believe me, that album is great!

 | Hey! Just finished this book! Not only a wonderful look from the inside of the Fleshtones but also a great story about how not to quit even success does not come!I agree with the recent records: "Laboratory of sound" doesn't sound at all but "More than skin deep" rules! Just a question: how react the guys themselves to this book? It's not a fairy tale story and every aspect even the "bad ones" are mentionned... Tanx again to Jo for this great bio: I want it on screen now!!!
