Children of Nuggets  27 August 2004
Look out for a four CD boxset from Rhino Records in the spring entitled Children of Nuggets and featuring "The Girl from Baltimore" and "The World Has Changed". Why the compilers did not see fit to call upon "American Beat" as the sure-fire party starter is bewildering given that it is an early example of a return to 60s garage band influences, a rousing call to arms for the Chesterfield Kings, Milkshakes, Barracudas et al, and neatly quotes the riff from "Gonna Make You Mine" by the Shadows of Knight. But hey, at least the band has two primo slices of wax on the collection while other influential bands (e.g. the Cannibals) are not even represented.

Wow -- was just thinking about this two weeks ago. So many good acts, so many great and defining songs of the garage era missing.
The two 'shtones cuts, for starters, aren't even their best examples of super rock. If they're gonna use any 'shtones at all, what about "Screaming Skull," "Stop Fooling Around," "Living Legends," "American Beat" (the REAL national anthem), "Mod Teepee," "Theme From The Vindicators," "Ride Your Pony," "Roman Gods," "Shadow-Line" and/or "Candy Ass"?
Or while we're at it, the spinoff stuff: "Baby Don't You Do It," "Way Down South" and "Full Time Men" (Full Time Men); "Psilocybe" (Mad Violets); "I Go Wild" (The Wild Hyenas); "Through the Night" and "I'm Gonna Knock You Out" (Love Delegation)?
That's just the 'shtones. Here's a partial list of the other MIA's:
Lyres -- I'm Telling You Girl, Not Looking Back, She Pays the Rent (fast version), We Sell Soul, How Do You Know, Stacy, Soapy, I'll Make It Up to You
Chesterfield Kings -- 99th Floor, I'll Go, Live Life
Cynics -- Baby What's Wrong, Creepin'
The Pandoras -- Hot Generation
Vipers -- Nothing's From Today (Battle of the Garages Vol. 2 version), Who Dat, Never Alone, Tellin' Those Lies, Got the Hurt
Mosquitos -- Darn Well, That was Then, This Is Now
The Secret Service -- What's Going On
The Brood -- And I Know, Satisfyin', Knock on My Door
The Double Naught Spys -- You Better Tell Me Now, I Can't Understand, Tryin' My Best, Tears from My Eyes
The Mummies -- Stronger Than Dirt
The Creeps -- Ain't No Square
The Nomads -- The Way You Touch My Hand, I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time
The Shoutless -- I Tell No Lies
The Gories -- Nitroglycerine, Hey Hey We're the Gories
Outrageous Cherry -- Georgie Don't You Know, Pale Frail Lovely One, Girl you Have Magic Inside You
Marshmallow Overcoat -- 13 Ghosts
The Long Ryders -- 10-5-60, Looking for Lewis and Clark
True West -- Lucifer Sam
The Friggs -- Bad Word for a Good Thing
Hoodoo Gurus -- In the Echo Chamber, Down on Me, What's My Scene, Party Machine, Come Anytime, Leilani, Bittersweet
Cosmic Psychos -- She's a Lost Cause
The Tryfles -- Gloria (In Excelsis Deo) (Yes, a Christmas song)
Smithereens -- Tracy's World, Girl Don't Tell Me
Swingin' Neckbreakers -- Wait, Same All Over the World, Take Your Life, Little Pink Medicine, Pool Hoppin', I Live for Buzz, Shake It Some More, I Took My Baby Home
The Flaming Sideburns -- Street Survivor
Laika & the Cosmonauts -- Global Village
Raybeats -- The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt
dB's -- She's Got Soul
Southern Culture on the Skids -- Camel Walk
The Untamed Youth -- Girl and a Hot Rod, Santa's Gonna Shut 'Em Down, Santa's Midnight Run (Yes, another 2 Xmas songs)
The Point -- On Comet (Come to think of it, maybe the best of the "Midnight Xmas Mess" tunes should be on a bonus disc)
The Mooney Suzuki -- Persephone
The Plimsouls -- Hush
Anyway, time for bed. Feel free to pile on here, but I can't see doing any such "Children of Nuggets" collection without any of these songs ...

Well Fran, from someone who was checking out a lot of the garage bands in London during the 80s, I would like to see the songs by Inspiral Carpets, LAs and Jesus & Mary Chain replaced by material by the Cannibals (e.g. I've Gone), the X-men, and Surfadelics. The last two were even favourites at Alan McGee's club, the Living Room, near the Post Office Tower circa 1984. Furthermore, the three bands nominated cherished 60s garage music to a fair greater degree and allowed this to permeate their music. Nothing against the Las/J&MC/Inspiral Carpets as people but I would hardly consider them as "Children of Nuggets". Most of the musicians I admire on the garage rock scene do not appear to be interested in half measures and which is why I think someone like Mike Spenser from the Cannibals should be represented at the expense of those bands with a bigger commercial pull. But then again, Rhino needs to attract the casual punter so I guess compromise is the order of the day for such a product. In the meantime, I suppose we can always make our own definitive compilations and stick them on a P2P network. Where to start though...

Steve, I'm pretty sure Gary and Alec didn't want that list posted for public viewing just yet, as the final track list is not set in stone just yet (this was just a working template, in other words).
